The European Union relocation of climate change refugees

In recognition of this imminent threat the national government has approached EU with a climate change adaptation plan.
Today EU’s rep in Solomon Islands Abdul Aziz Mbye confirms EU’s readiness to assist Solomon Islands with any relocation plan.

More than 300 logging licenses given to logging companies

More than three hundred logging licenses were given to logging companies involved in the destruction of Solomon Islands natural forests.
The Solomon Islands Diagnostic Trade Integration Study 2009 report says that as of July 2008, a total of 333 licenses were issued, 150 of which were milling while 183 for felling.

Tsunami warning strike fear among many

The national disaster council issued a nation wide tsunami warning early yesterday morning following an 8.8 earth quake that struck Chile in South of America that generated a tsunami. A pacific warning was issued by the pacific warning center in Honolulu Hawaii for the whole of the pacific. The PTC warning said less than 1 meter wave should hit Solomon Islands between 10 to 11 am yesterday.

Journalists to train on children’s rights issues after launch of new program

Solomon Islands journalists will be trained on promoting children’s rights under a project launched on Friday by Save the Children. The Australian funded project will allow local journalists to undergo training to fit in the UN Convention on Rights of the Child (CRC) in their work. This training will also focus on techniques which can be used when interviewing children, and guidelines for reporting on child-related issues.

18 graduate in women and leadership trainings

18 participants from a two week intensive training workshop at King Solomon Hotel graduated as qualified trainers on Friday. The United Nations Development fund for Women funded workshop aims at helping women in leadership and participation in governments. The graduates of the workshop are now qualified to design training programs and modify modules for their organization especially on women’s political participation and representation in the context of elections. The UNIFEM’s Gender Equality in Political Governance program is a 5 year initiative co-funded by Ausaid under its Pacific Leadership Program.

Work underway on new Gizo hospital

After it was damaged in the 2007 earthquake and tsunami work has now started on the new Gizo Referral Hospital. The Premier of the Western Province says the Japanese funded project will cater for communities as far as Choiseul and even Isabel.

A Korean fishing company, will soon operate a processing factory here in the country. The Fisheries Minister says the project is expected to employ about 3000 locals. He says the project has already been submitted to the Cabinet for consideration and will be located at Tenaru.

Local student in Cuba treated for mental illness

A local student studying in Cuba is currently being treated for a mental illness. The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has sent a local doctor to Cuba to treat and assess the student before he is brought back home. The student who is in medical school is expected to travel back home next week.

The three day workshop will be official opened by the permanent secretary of women youth and children affairs Ethel Sigimanu.
